Meet the Tribal Council


Vernon Miller, part of the Thunder Clan from the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska, is the former Business Teacher at Umonhon (Omaha) Nation Public Schools on the Omaha Tribal Reservation in Macy, Nebraska.  Miller was named Teacher of the Year by the National Indian Education Association in 2010, was appointed Chairman of the Omaha Tribal Election Commission in 2011, and in 2012 was named Indian Country’s 40 under 40 by the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development.


Mr. Miller has also been awarded the State of Nebraska Dr. Matthew Ricketts Trailblazer Award in honor and recognition of Outstanding Accomplishments in the area of education and promoting the dream of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  He previously served on the Board of Directors for the Nebraska State Education Association (NSEA), and as a member of the Executive Board for the Elkhorn District in the NSEA.


Mr. Miller has also previously served as the Western Regional Director & Election Chair for the American Indian/Alaska Native Caucus for the National Education Association (NEA).   In November 2012, Vernon was selected by the University of Nebraska as an “Alumni Master.”  Every fall, outstanding alumni return to campus to share their experiences and knowledge with students.


As a 2010/2011 Americans for Indian Opportunity (AIO) Ambassador, Vernon has been able to partake in a leadership development and community building initiative based on traditional Indigenous values for Native Americans seeking to positively impact their community, strengthen their ability to improve their communities well-being, reaffirm cultural values and identity, as well as Incorporate traditional values into strategies for the future.
